The Auntie Duck scheme, developed in partnership with The Dog, Duck and Cat Charitable Trust  and Sandwell Council’s air quality experts, uses a specially written children’s storybook to help primary school pupils understand the importance of clean air and the impact of air pollution. With the West Midlands Combined Authority supporting its rollout across the region, the programme has already reached schools across the West Midlands, providing lesson plans, assemblies, and hands-on activities that link directly to the Education Curriculum.

The Modeshift National Travel Awards celebrate excellence in promoting sustainable and active travel across the UK. This year’s awards saw a record number of nominations, with the Education Engagement Project of the Year category split into two to recognise both individual and multiple school impact projects.

Councillor Jackie Taylor, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health, said: “Auntie Duck is a fantastic example of how we are putting our Child Friendly Sandwell principles into action—making sure every child in Sandwell feels safe, heard, and inspired to make healthy choices. By helping children understand the importance of clean air and how their actions can make a difference, we’re not only protecting their health today but also empowering them to shape a better future for everyone in our community. I’m delighted that this programme has been recognised nationally for its positive impact.”

The winners will be announced at the Team Modeshift National Awards Ceremony in November.
