Hundreds of Sandwell children inspired by Alexander Armstrong’s visit to West Bromwich Town Hall

More than 300 children from schools across Sandwell enjoyed a special visit from actor, comedian, presenter and author Alexander Armstrong.

The event, held at West Bromwich Town Hall and Central Library on Thursday 12 February, saw him launch his brand-new book, Evenfall: The Tempest Stone.

During the event, Alexander captivated young audiences with readings and stories about becoming an author, and a passionate message about the power of reading as part of his role as an ambassador for the National Year of Reading 2026 – a national campaign supporting people of all ages to rediscover reading for enjoyment.

Armstrong’s book is the second title in his hugely popular Evenfall fantasy series. The first instalment, Evenfall: The Golden Linnet, became the UK’s number one bestselling children’s debut fiction and the number one bestselling children’s hardback fiction book.

Speaking about the visit, Alexander Armstrong said:
“It was a joy to meet so many bright, enthusiastic young readers in Sandwell. Reading opens doors to adventure, imagination and opportunity, and I’m thrilled to help inspire the next generation as they discover the stories that will stay with them for life.”

Organised by Sandwell Libraries, the event supported Sandwell’s ambition to be a Child Friendly borough, putting young people at the heart of local activity and ensuring they have access to enriching learning opportunities. It also reflects the Sandwell Council Plan priorities around raising aspirations, improving health and wellbeing, and strengthening communities through literacy and engagement.

Sandwell Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community, Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, said:

“This was a fantastic opportunity for Sandwell children to meet a much-loved author and celebrity and discover how exciting reading can be. Encouraging a love of books supports wellbeing, boosts confidence and builds the foundations for lifelong learning. We are proud to deliver events like this that put children first and help them thrive.”

The Department for Education’s National Year of Reading 2026, delivered with the National Literacy Trust, aims to reverse the national decline in reading for pleasure and reconnect communities with the positive impact reading can have every day.

Sandwell Libraries continue to offer a wide range of free activities, books and resources for children and families.
